A two-day summer school exploring how books have been made, consumed and read following the invention of lithography in the early nineteenth century. The summer school combines talks by leading scholars and practitioners with a hands-on approach using our collections and archives.

Participants will see and practice lithographic printing from stone; they will gain understanding of some the ways in which lithography transformed the ways that books are made and read, in Latin and Arabic script, and books for children.  Our publishers’ archives and collections of book-related printed ephemera (book plates, trade cards, bookmarks, publishers’ promotional material) will inform talks and sessions to support understanding through looking and questioning. Talks with examples from our printing collection will show type and typography from the past informs what readers experience today

The enrolment fee will include all refreshments (drinks and lunches) and materials.

An in-person ticket costs £20 for standard delegates, but is free for students, postgrads, and those in precarious employment. This fee is a contribution towards catering costs.

An in-person ticket will include lunches and refreshments on both days, and the wine reception and film screening on day 1, as well as access to all keynotes, roundtables and panels.

There is no cost for a virtual ticket, which will give access to all keynotes, roundtables and panels. We regret that virtual participants will not have access to the film screening on day 1.
